MTT leads Mahler in San Francisco, Cleveland, and Zurich this spring

Feb 10, 2023

This spring, MTT—one of the world’s finest Mahler interpreters—will lead Mahler symphonies with three major orchestras.

MTT will conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 (“Tragic”) with the San Francisco Symphony from March 31 to April 1. “There is utter honesty, humor, tenderness, and, in the third movement, an homage to the power of love,” MTT has said about Mahler 6. “ Mahler said that a symphony should mirror life. His entire symphonic output is a testament to that belief, and nowhere did he realize this credo so powerfully as in his Sixth Symphony.” Their joint recording of the work received a Grammy Award in 2002.

MTT will then travel to Cleveland to lead the Cleveland Orchestra Mahler Symphony No. 1 (“Titan”) from April 13–16. The program also includes Debussy’s Jeux (Games), a “danced poem,” and Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra with Leif Ove Andsnes.

Finally, in June, MTT will make his debut with Switzerland’s Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich with two performances of Mahler 6.
