Michael Tilson Thomas (1944–2026)

It is with deep sadness that we let you know of Michael Tilson Thomas’s passing on April 22, 2026. In 2021, Michael was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive type of brain cancer. Through his illness he continued to make music—a testament to his legacy as an artist and communicator. He was preceded in death by his husband Joshua Robison, and passed away at home surrounded by loved ones and family. Joshua and Michael are survived by their sisters, nieces, and nephews. 

Joshua Robison, 1946–2026

It is with great sadness that we share with you that Joshua Robison, MTT’s husband, passed away in his sleep during the night of February 22. Everyone who knew Joshua understood what a passionate and generous person he was. He will be profoundly missed by his husband, Michael Tilson Thomas, his family, and his wide circle of friends and colleagues.

Two MTT Songs Released

On the occasion of MTT’s 81st birthday, tenor Ben Jones and pianist John Wilson have recorded and released two songs written by Michael Tilson Thomas. In addition to his major compositions, MTT wrote the music and lyrics for dozens of songs over the course of his lifetime. Most songs were written during an especially creative period in his life in the 1970s and 1980s.
