This Wednesday, Michael Tilson Thomas returns to the podium of the London Symphony Orchestra as the ensemble’s Principal Guest Conductor for concerts in Madrid (June 5) and at London’sBarbican Centre (June 9, 11, 12). In the Spanish capital, MTT and the LSO present a program comprising Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma joins MTT and the LSO in London for their Barbican performances. On June 9, Ma guests in Shostakovich’sFirst Cello Concerto in a concert program that reprises Britten’sYoung Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and includes Copland’s Orchestral Variations and Short Symphony. For their second Barbican concert on June 11, MTT leads the LSO in Copland’s Quiet City, Britten’s Prince of the Pagodas suite, and Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto with Ma. On June 12, MTT caps off his June LSO performances with Copland’s Inscape, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, and Britten’s Symphony for Cello and Orchestra, also with Ma.
