Michael Tilson Thomas to be featured in two PBS Great Performances broadcasts airing on March 29 & 30

Michael Tilson Thomas will be featured in two newGreat Performances presentations to be broadcast nationally in the US on PBS this March. On Thursday, March 29, PBS airs The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater at 8 p.m. (check local listings). The television program, written and hosted by MTT, examines the life and legacy of MTT’s grandparents, the Yiddish theater pioneers Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky. After its national broadcast on PBS, The Thomashefskys will bereleased on DVD by New Video on April 24 with bonus material that includes musical performances, an interview with MTT, and a feature on the New World Symphony.

On March 30, PBS’s Great Performances broadcasts the San Francisco Symphony’s Centennial Season opening night gala, San Francisco Symphony at 100.  Starting at 9 p.m., the two-hour broadcast is hosted by best-selling author Amy Tan and features MTT conducting violinist Itzhak Perlman performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor and pianist Lang Lang performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major.  On April 1, San Francisco Symphony at 100 will be released on DVD and Blu-ray with bonus historical material on April 1.
