MTT and the London Symphony Orchestra Celebrate 50+ of Making Music Together

On October 20 and 23, 2024, MTT led the London Symphony Orchestra in two performances of Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” at Barbican Hall. The performances, which featured mezzo-soprano Alice Coote and soprano Siobhan Stagg, were universally praised by the London press:

“This performance of the Symphony No 2, ‘Resurrection,’ unfolded on a monumental scale. —Financial Times

“This was not a conductor fighting demons on stage, but someone who had already sized them up and would be able to lead us to the other side. —The Guardian

“A packed Barbican Hall tonight experienced the miracle of Mahler’s second symphony made all the more miraculous by the conducting of Michael Tilson Thomas […] To even the most jaded Mahlerian ears, this was a truly uplifting performance.” —Slipped Disc

“A brisk and bold Resurrection Symphony.” —The Times

“A performance wreathed in the autumnal glow of a man who’s at peace with the world and is ready to face the next chapter on life’s journey.”—BachTrack

The London Symphony Orchestra has been a major musical partner for MTT throughout his career, beginning with his podium debut in 1970 through his years as Principal Conductor (1988–1995) and Conductor Laureate (1995–present), and dozens of recordings made together.
