On March 8 and 9, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony give the opening concerts of the American Mavericks Festival with works by Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, and Lou Harrison.
This celebration of the American musical voice begins with two orchestral transcriptions, the first by Henry Brant of Ives’s famous Concord piano sonata and the second by Copland of his own Piano Variations. The program will also include Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Organ with Percussion Orchestra, featuring the organist Paul Jacobs. You can learn more about Lou Harrison at the March 6 premiere screening of the Eva Soltes’s documentary Lou Harrison: A World of Music, at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.
