Michael Tilson Thomas continues his Midwest performances this month as he returns to conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in concerts from November 21 to 24 . Mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor joins MTT and the CSO for Igor Stravinsky’s Elegy for JFK, a setting of specially commissioned poetry by W.H. Auden. MTT then leads the Orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 9.

Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony travel to New York, Illinois and Michigan for concerts at Carnegie Hall ( November 13 and 14 ), Champaign-Urbana’s Krannert Center ( November 15 ), and Ann Arbor’s Hill Auditorium ( November 16 ). The concerts include a program of Viennese classicism and modern classical American music with pianist Jeremy Denk, as well as performances of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony.

In advance of their tour to New York, Illinois and Michigan, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony present a program of Austrian and American works at Davies Symphony Hall November 7 to 10 . The concerts open with Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, followed by Steven Mackey’s Eating Greens.
