New DVD captures 1970 Boston Symphony Orchestra performances of Ives, Sibelius and Wagner

ICA Classics has released on DVD Michael Tilson Thomas’s 1970 performances of music by Charles Ives, Richard Wagner and Jean Sibelius with theBoston Symphony Orchestra. The recordings, which were originally recorded for WGBH’s Evening at Symphony, capture MTT leading the BSO in Ives’s Three Places in New England, Sibelius’s Fourth Symphony, and “Dawn” and “Siegfried’s Rhine Journey” from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung.

The new release looks back at MTT’s tenure as the BSO’s Assistant Conductor, a role he assumed after winning the Koussevitzky Prize at Tanglewood in 1969. The DVD also features exclusive bonus interviews with MTT, offering insight into the performances.
