After kicking off the 2011-12 season at the New World Symphony Orchestra, Michael Tilson Thomas returns to San Francisco in November to continue the orchestra’s centenary season with three weeks of concerts at Davies Symphony Hall.
First, from November 11 to 13, MTT presents a program that features three works by Schubert: the composer’s Overture to Alfonso und Estrella, the famous Piano Quintent in A major “Trout,” and the Mahler arrangement of Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor, “Death and the Maiden.” Then, from November 17 to 20, MTT leads the San Francisco Symphony in Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. For the final week of concerts, taking place November 23 to 26, MTT and the SFS are joined by violin virtuoso Gil Shaham for Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major. Also on the program are the Prelude to Act III of Wagner’sLohengrin and the Schoenberg arrangement of Brahms’ First Piano Quartet.
